Stuttgart, the capital of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, is around 631.000 inhabitants, the largest city in BW. Stuttgart is also the sixth largest city in Germany and as a region has approx.2.8 million Resident The city is also an urban district and has 23 municipal districts.

Stuttgart lies “between forest and vines” in the “Stuttgart Kessel”, which extends in the northern part to the Neckar basin, in the western part to Glemswald, in the eastern part to the Schurwald and in the southern edge to the Filder plain and the Schönbuch extends. Neckar flows from Esslingen into the urban area near Hedelfingen/Obertürkheim and leaves it again in Mühlhausen in the northeast.

Hiking in and around Stuttgart

If you hike in the Stuttgart metropolitan region, you will experience e.g.b Magnificent natural spectacles on the Heslach circular tour, at Bärenseeen and during a wine hike in Obertürkheim. On the Württemberg with its 411m. Height and on the summit of the Birkenkopf with its 511m. height, you can enjoy impressive views of the Neckar valley.

The 10 top hiking routes to recommend

1-    To the Urach waterfall

The Uracher Waterfall is located in the Maisental near Bad Urach and belongs to the Swabian Alb region. The water crashes from 37m. Free fall into the deep gorge and then run 50 meters over the steep rocks down into the valley. It's truly a breathtaking view!

The route starts at the Maisental hiking car park and leads along the small Brühbach. Shortly before we reach the Urach waterfall, we pass the smaller waterfall. Located next to a cow pasture, it actually gets very little attention. But if you feel like cooling your feet in the ice-cold water, a detour would be worthwhile, especially in summer. From here we walk a few steps to our actual destination. We climb the moss-covered and slippery stone stairs to the top of the cliff edge. It's really cool that we can even walk behind the falling water without any danger.

If you want to make the route to the Urach waterfall a little longer and combine it a little further, you can hike on the ten kilometer long waterfall trail.

2-    To the Schönbuchturm and to Herrenberg

We start at the forest cemetery and climb the spiral stairs to 35m. high viewing platform. There we enjoy the panoramic view over the Schönbuch to the Swabian Alb. You can then hike on the Turm Runde hiking trail to Herrenberg. On the path we walk through a forest, across the orchards and past the Schlossberg Herrenberg. After 4.5km. At the Powder Tower we enjoy the beautiful view of the city and walk down the stairs to the historic market square.

It would be worth taking a stroll through the old town of Herrenberg. Not only because of the pretty half-timbered houses, but also because of the small shops. We either go back through the forest to the starting point of the hike or take bus no.782.

3-    To Bebenhausen in Schönbuch (A pure nature hike)

The route starts at the writing tower, where the Schönbuch information center is also located. Shortly afterwards the monastery complex is on the left. After the tour, we walk through the defensive wall into the orchards. Then we follow the asphalted dirt road “Böblinger Straße” and turn after approx.300m. turn left into “Jordan Traufweg”, which takes us to the wonderful view of the monastery complex. We come to the further viewing point “Mörike-Ruhe” through the wild gate. After enjoying the view, we head back to the hiking trail. Here we go towards Brühlsee and the deer enclosure.

Arriving at the enclosure, we turn to the west and, after the detour on the Stoffelskohlsträßle, go downhill into the Kleine Goldersbachtal to the “Teufelsbrücke” rest area. The Großer Goldersbach and the Kleine Goldersbach flow together here.

Now we walk along the Leichtsweg and Goldersstraße towards Bebenhausen along the stream. After we arrive at the "Schlosener Brunnen" height, we can hike along the forest path along the Sulfur Brünnele through the orchards back to our starting point.

4-    About the vineyards of Endersbach

The start is at the S-Bahn station in Endersbach. From here we walk along May Eyth Street to Siemensstraße. We continue in a northerly direction through the town before taking a detour to Villa Rustica shortly after the end of the town.Now we walk through beautiful landscapes, over the vineyards and orchards and reach the water tank. From here we continue down through Harthau to Stetten and uphill again to the Yburg ruins to the Württemberg wine hiking trail, which we follow to Strrumpfelbach. Then it goes back across the orchards to the starting point in Endersbach.

5-    Gschwend – hike over the Hagberg tower to the historic mills

The route starts at the hiking car park on Hagberg, west of Gschwen, between the hamlets of Haghof and Sturmhof. You can hike over to the Hagbergturm either before or after the route and enjoy the beautiful view of the Swabian-Franconian Forest, Stuttgart and the Swabian Alb. To do this you simply have to follow the “blue bar on a white background”.

From Easter to October, the Hagbergturm is open on Sundays and public holidays. If you want, you can also get the key from the Frank family, Am Wasserhof 6, Tel: 07972/911923. The family lives in Wasserhof, approx.400m. at a distance from the tower.

We first follow the “blue bar” from the hiking car park until we reach the large fork in the path at the “Großer Eulenwaldweg”. Here you should pay attention to the hiking sign “red dot on a white background”. Now we walk along the “red dot” to the right and follow the hiking sign to Menzlesmühle. On the way to Menzlesmühle we cross the L1080 twice. Here we make sure that the path leads to the Menzlesmühle and often change the direction of the path. We turn at the Menzlesmühle, but can extend the tour to the Hundsberger Sägemühle. We walk from the Menzlesmühle back to the “hiking car park at Hagberg”.

6-    Through the Glemswald

The route starts at the hiking car park on Magstadter Straße. From here we go to Pfaffensee, from which we then go east along the south bank of the lake.The hike continues over the Stuttgarter Torweg and the forester's lodge to the crossing under the Wildparkstrasse.

We then walk along the Saufangweg to the wild boar enclosure. Then we follow the path until we arrive at Solitude Castle. We return via the Bruderhausallee and the Bärenschlössele, where we can stop for a break.After we have finished the rest, we choose the north bank of the Pfaffensee and go back to the parking lot, to the start and end points of the route.

7-    Nagold – Pforzheim (24h route)

We start the hike at the Nagold train station and immediately go up to reach the eaves of the Nagoldtal. A few km. Let's go down the plateau to Wildberg and climb the western eaves of the valley opposite. In Seitzental we end the first cross valley on the hiking trail. We arrive in Neubulach at almost the same altitude and continue to Liebelsberg on the edge of the Teinachtal. Now we hike to Bad Teinach and uphill again to Zavelstein, via which we arrive in meadows and forest at the Rötenbachtal. Here we walk along the Altburg to the Spindlerhof down into the Schweinsbachtal.

We leave the natural valley near Oberreichenbach and head north. Here we go around Oberkollbach on the eastern side. We reach the highest point of the route at Zainen / Maisenbach, at 669m. Height We reach our destination via the Waldhubendörfer Oberlegenhart and the Schwarzenberg and come close to Pforzheim. Here we first hike through the Eulental and go up the last climb to Grunbach. Then we just go downhill, along the Nagoldhang, back to Dillweißenstein train station.

8-    Heslach circular hike

We start the route from the Waldeck tram stop and walk through the Schwälblesklinge. Through Waldheim Heimgarten and through the forest cemetery we hike downhill via Vierreichenhau to Heslach. Then we walk along Böblinger Straße and Leonberger Straße to Baumreute. Above the “In der Ziegenklinge” we continue uphill to the Heslacher Wand and cross the Gäubahn. We then follow the “blue bar” marking on the left side.

We walk past the Rudolph Sophien Stift, a few meters along the road and then turn right at an acute angle onto the steep and narrow path downhill, where we go to the Obere Heidenklinge.Now we are at the Heslach waterfall and continue downhill towards Stuttgarter Rösslesweg and then to the KV 95 sports field. Here we continue to the Waldheim Heslach, through the badger forest to Borgenstrasse.A wooden bridge leads us from Bogenstrasse over the Eisenbach and along the Eissee-Reisenwaldweg natural monument to the white bridge. Ultimately we go to the Österfeld S-Bahn stop, the end point of this tour.

9-    Eastern Panorama Trail - Aspach

The starting point of this route is the Rietenau sports area. We continue along Badstrasse, past the Badpark and the fountain, to the fish ponds in the Forstbachtal. In the middle of orchards we now walk uphill to the Güldenkern to the Rietenau vineyards. Here we have the unique view and take our eating break. Now we go down into the Heiligental, along the Heiligentalbach and then the Jettenbach, where we can hear the lively babbling.

We continue uphill again to Wengertschützenhäusle and have beautiful views in front of us again. Here we go steeply downhill, past the Allmersbacher Kelter and reach the town of Allmersbach am Weinberg. Now we cross the main street and walk on the footpath and cycle path in the direction of Großaspach. Before the sports facilities at the green waste collection point in Fautenhau, we turn left, go to the hill and from there enjoy the good view of the sports facilities.

Passing repatriate farms, we come to Hohrot, cross the district road at the pedestrian crossing and after approx.300m. at the Stegmühle. A grass path leads us along the beautiful farm garden to the edge of the forest and we walk on the public path across the grounds of the riding stables. We continue along the edge of the forest to the Schneckenberg ponds. We then reach the path towards Buch-Eich on the connecting road, follow it and turn left after a short distance. On the coming dirt road we now reach the rocket path, which is located on the upper side of the weekend house area. We continue downhill again to the elevated water tank. If we now keep to the left we will reach the starting point in a short time. But if we follow the path markings, we come across the Schönenbühl, past the edge of the wall, to the fish ponds. Now we can reach the sports grounds via Badstrasse and Rietenau.

10- The Wieselweg

This circular hike starts at Rudersberg train station. The starting point can be easily reached from Schorndorf using the Wieslauftalbahn. At the beginning we go up to the Haube viewpoint and to the Juxhöhle. On this hiking trail we meet approx.14Km. around 350m. Differences in height, which also have steep gradients. The route is described here in a clockwise direction and turns left at the train stop into Kelterstraße. Then we walk past the cemetery up to the joke with the joke cave.

Its entrance is on the southern side of the Juxhöhle. The entrance is 2-5m. high, approx.12m. wide and 20m. deep The cave, which was created by underground mining of sandstone, is closed at the back due to the risk of collapse and to protect bats. Here we continue past Kallenberg and Lutzenberg to the Haube viewpoint. When we arrive at the Althütte, we take the path down into the Wieslauftal to Klaffenbach and finally back to the starting point.
