Germany's landscapes are often dramatic and breathtaking, crisscrossed by rivers and mountains, punctuated by castles and volcanic craters, and dotted with idyllic towns, charming farms and beautiful campsites. From the Rhineland to the Baltic Sea islands to Lower Saxony, there's plenty of nature to explore, parks to explore and museums to visit, whether you're looking for a history-filled holiday or an escape from the city. Here are eight of Campsited's best destinations to experience everything the German countryside has to offer.

1-    Nature Camping Vulkaneifel

As spa guests know, a land full of volcanoes also means bubbling thermal springs and historic spa towns: this region has both, along with many hiking and biking trails around the region's forested slopes, lakes, foothills and nature reserves. Natur-Camping Vulkaneifel is only one kilometer away from the pretty health resort of Manderscheid, where the Eifelsteig and the Vulkanbike Trailpark pass.

There is also a lot to do on the site itself, as it is located on a green, south-facing slope directly next to the forest and is lined with old fruit trees and hedges. Only a third of the property is dedicated to accommodation, the other two thirds are available for leisure activities.

A beautiful large pool is where adults and children spend most of their time, as there is a water slide for the little ones, plenty of space and sun loungers and umbrellas for a long swim by the pool. There is more fun in the spacious playground or on the multi-sports field, where guests of all ages and all sports can let off steam with table tennis, volleyball, badminton, basketball and football.

2-    Mühlenbach holiday paradise

If a pair of hiking boots or jogging shoes are never too far away for you, head to Ferienparadies Mühlenbach, a family-friendly resort 10 minutes' drive from the Saxon town of Soltau - a dream for adventurers (and non-adventurers too not bad).

Are you traveling with risers and slackers? Active holidaymakers can explore the Heidekreis by renting an e-bike, an e-scooter, a Segway or a hoverboard at reception or taking trips by car to the Lüneburg Heath, 15 minutes away. Would you prefer a relaxing day on site? Stroll to the edge of the tranquil swimming lake, where overheated guests can cool off and dogs can splash around in their own space.

Speaking of man's best friend: The area is also ideally equipped for four-legged friends: They can let off steam on a leash in a fenced-in dog meadow and take courses with experienced dog trainers if they can no longer distinguish sitting from walking.

If you feel hungry, there is a restaurant on site - for a breakfast buffet in the morning or for a German-Italian dinner in the evening. Alternatively, you can also cater for yourself by making a pit stop at the small self-service market and opting for an evening at the grill.

3-    Via-Claudia Camping

With a breathtaking view of the mountains and the emerald green Lechsee, this course is not only in beautiful surroundings, but also in close proximity to attractions such as Neuschwanstein Castle and the beautiful 18th century Wieskirche.

In the village of Lechbruck am See, Via Claudia Camping is located between a private lake and a spectacular mountain range in Bavaria. It borders on the first main road through the Alps, which connects the Adriatic port of Altinum with the Danube: the ancient Via Claudia Augusta. A second, smaller swimming lake, the Baderwäldlesee, is just a few minutes' walk from the site and is ideal for swimming due to the temperature of its moor water.

You can relax on the beach and in the water of Lake Lech and use the lake's boat docks and slipway if you have a boat that can be found there.

They can let off steam for a while in the park's two lounges, which are specially designed for the little ones: there is a playroom with toys for the little ones and a separate lounge with a table tennis table and a chess board for the older ones; Books and board games can also be borrowed at reception to make your free time on site even more enjoyable.

If you like something more active, you can climb, swing and slide on the playground, let off steam on the football field, shoot balls back and forth on the sandy volleyball field or, if you want something a little more unusual, do boccia and curling.

The in-house restaurant provides delicious Bavarian delicacies with delicious things such as Allgäu mountain cheese spaetzle and crisp salads, which you can of course wash down with freshly tapped Bavarian beer and selected organic wines. For sunny days, there is a spacious, shady beer garden attached to the restaurant area.

The site's modern amenities include three sanitary blocks, a children's wash area with changing room and four additional bathrooms with a sink, shower and toilet, which you can rent if you want a little more privacy. And if your little one needs a shower, there is also a dog shower on site. Barbecuing is allowed and you can buy gas on site.

4-    Bavaria Kur-Sport Campingpark

A little jewel in Passau" is the verdict on the Bavaria Kur-Sport Campingpark nature and forest site on the edge of the health resort of Eging am See.

A quiet stay surrounded by trees and greenery puts you within shouting distance of the car-free and famous Danube cycle path, which passes directly by the square, and a few minutes by car (or five minutes on foot) from the clean, clear waters of Lake Eginger with its sandy beach, the recreation areas and boat rentals - or, for the more hardcore, ice skating and curling in winter. For even more cycling and forest hiking, the 100-kilometer-long Bavarian Forest that surrounds the lake is ideal.

The Kur-Sport Camping Park is located on a stream and offers the opportunity to fish directly from the site. Amenities include a clean and comfortable sanitary block with disabled access and free hot showers, a sports field and playground for all ages, and a sun terrace where you can spend long afternoons in the sun. A pool table, games and toys are available for indoor use.

With the help of the Kur-Sport grocery store and the gas bottle sales, you can light a barbecue or a campfire here. But leave time - and space - for a stop at the square's restaurant and bar, which serves traditional Bavarian cuisine and traditional Bavarian beer.

5-    Camping Naabtal-Pielenhofen

If you like to spend part of your holiday in, by or on the river, you can be among like-minded people at the Bavarian campsite Naabtal-Pielenhofen on the banks of the Naab, a few minutes outside of Pielenhofen.

Swimming and fishing are common here, and a few local companies can outfit you with canoes or kayaks for longer water adventures. On land, a great river cycle path leads to the outskirts of Regensburg, where you can take the path along the mighty Danube to Vienna, Bratislava and beyond.

However, constant energetic excursions are not mandatory - the time spent on site is just as rewarding. On the six-hectare site of the Naabtal-Pielenhofen campsite there is a tennis court, a playground and many cozy meadows for afternoon reading or picnics. And whether you've gone on a long hike or spent the day lounging around, you'll probably want to take advantage of the wellness facilities: a sauna to loosen up those limbs and a tanning bed for guaranteed holiday glow.

If you have spent the day active or lazy, you can enjoy the evening in traditional Bavarian style in the cozy beer garden (Bavaria is rightly known as Germany's beer capital.). As well as the beers, the food is also highly recommended and you don't have to walk far to get it; the local restaurant serves sausages, stews and the like just a few steps away.

6-    Camping Schwabenmühle

It's time to raise a glass to the Tauber Valley - and to days spent wandering through forests, hills, pretty towns and (especially) vineyards. And then have a drink at Camping Schwabenmühle, a family-run campsite that is an excellent base for outdoor activities in this area.

Do you want to travel by bike? The place is located directly on the Lieblichen Taubertal cycle path and close to many other kilometers of cycling. Hikers can let off steam on more than 100 kilometers of signposted paths (not all in one go.) and riders can saddle up a few kilometers further. Far less strenuous than all of this is the walk to the nearest village of Laudenbach, which only takes about five minutes and promises culinary rewards in the bakery, supermarket and restaurant.

Food is probably very important here (with all the activities awaiting you), so know that there are plenty of options: there is a café bar and a kitchenette with microwave on site, and within a five minute drive There is a good selection of restaurants in distant Weikersheim.

High on the priority list is probably a good hot shower, which is available here in smart, modern toilet blocks with accessible and family shower rooms, as well as a baby changing room and dedicated children's toilets. Other on-site family-friendly amenities include a playground, WiFi for gadget addicts, and a cozy reading nook where weary souls can curl up with a book.

7-    Camping Erbenwald

Stay fit, stay active at Camping Erbenwald near Neubulach in Baden-Württemberg, because there are plenty of opportunities for exercise for all sizes and the site is in a hiking paradise near the beautiful Black Forest and close to Tennis courts and a golf club.

On site there is a heated outdoor swimming pool with an adjoining paddling pool for the little energy lovers, a football field and a sports field, table tennis tables and a playground; If you wish, you can even wash your car on site. Not interested in sporting activities? No problem: there is also a large lawn where you can relax in the sun, a solarium and two lounges.

Guests can also let off steam to their heart's content when it comes to catering, by catering for themselves at the large fireplace and barbecue area as well as at the cooking and washing up area, or by eating small snacks or warm meals in the campsite's restaurant. Both should be taken care of in a well-stocked shop.

The Erbenwald team is rightly proud of its modern facilities, which include four well-maintained toilet and shower buildings with changing facilities and disabled access.

8-    Perdöler Mühle campsite

Fancy a fresh start? A lakeside oasis in rural Schleswig-Holstein could be just the thing. How about this place near Wankendorf with direct access to Lake Belauer?

The Perdöler Mühle campsite is a family-friendly site in a rural location, surrounded by water, wildflowers, old oak trees and green meadows. It is only a short walk to the beach at Lake Belauer. The beach is very accessible and has a very gentle slope into the water, making it suitable for children and less experienced swimmers.

After a refreshing swim, you can fortify yourself in the in-house café and restaurant, where you can enjoy homemade cakes and an evening menu of healthy local cuisine. If you don't feel like worrying about eating in the morning, you can also order a breakfast basket and start the day with vigor.

The nearby small town of Wankendorf is just a five-minute drive away and has all the essential facilities such as a supermarket and a pharmacy as well as an ice cream parlor and a children's playground. The historic city of Plön with its lakeside castle (20 minutes) is also easy to reach, and for longer excursions, the vibrant port cities of Kiel (35 minutes), Lübeck (one hour) and Hamburg (one hour) are ideal.

9-    Oktoberfest at Camping Obermenzing

Ah, the Oktoberfest. Of all the major festivals on the to-do list of globetrotters and backpackers, the fortnightly Munich Beer Festival is certainly the biggest and booziest of them all.

The Oktoberfest at the Obermenzing campsite offers pop-up accommodation of the coziest kind in a quiet park, far enough away from the oompah bands and foaming beer mugs of the beer festival, but still within a 20-minute drive can.

In Munich the beer is stronger and in larger glasses, and this also applies to your accommodation: spacious and bright, big enough to stand in (or swing a mug.), with comfortable double beds, duvets and hot water bottles, bedside tables, sockets and lighting.

A berth in this most luxurious of all Oktoberfest accommodations also entitles you to unlimited tea, coffee, hot soup and hot chocolate, as well as a hot breakfast in the morning. And at the end of the day, when the festival's rides slow down and the ladies in dirndls call out "Last Orders", things really get going at the base, with after-parties with live music, DJs, barbecue, sangria and. more beer.

Fancy a holiday where the children are fully looked after? Then pack the little ones in the car and head to the Abenteuerland campsite, a family-friendly site 15 minutes by car from the town of Warburg in the Höxter district in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The course is specially designed for children, teenagers and young adults and offers a lot of variety for all age groups: archery for aspiring Robin Hoods, a pirate ship for warriors, go-karts for speed fanatics, llama hikes for young zoologists, a climbing course and an adventure -Survivor course for active people and a swimming pond for splashing around.

Sociability and exercise in nature are very important here, and there are plenty of team sports such as beach volleyball and football (regular and table football), as well as plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors and meet other guests. And most of it will continue even in bad weather because there is a covered all-weather pitch to keep the activities going.

When cabin fever takes over, off-site days are easy to access - stay active with hikes in the Egge Mountains (the site is in the foothills) or leisurely bike rides along the Diemel River that flows through Warburg, or you decide opt for a night out on the town to try some local dishes.
