The bikepacking adventure: A journey from Freiburg to Basel
The rustling of the wind, the clinking of bicycle chains and the feeling of freedom on two wheels. Bikepacking, cycling over several days with overnight stays outdoors, has increased in popularity in recent years. But what makes this type of vacation so special? And is it also suitable for beginners?
The beginning of an exciting journey
The journey begins in Freiburg, a picturesque city in southwest Germany. Despite the less than ideal cycling weather, the excitement in the air is palpable. The route does not lead directly to Basel, but takes a picturesque detour through France. The journey takes you through Alsace, past Colmar and over the Grand Ballon, the highest mountain in the Vosges, before ending in Basel.
The right equipment
Preparation is key to bikepacking. Everything needed for the tour, from tents to sleeping bags to food, is stored in waterproof bags on the bike. Luggage should be as light as possible, which means that when packing you have to limit yourself to the essentials.
The journey through nature
The route leads through picturesque meadows and vineyards. Thanks to a special app, it is ensured that mainly field and cycle paths and not main roads are used. The transition from Germany to France is seamless and offers a unique feeling of entering another country by bike.
The challenges along the way
Although cycling is fun, it is not without its challenges. The weather can be unpredictable and there are parts of the route that would be more suitable for a mountain bike. But these little obstacles only add to the adventure.
Arrival in Colmar
Colmar, a small, picturesque and medieval town, is a highlight of the trip. Even though the city is just passing through, it is a breathtaking sight. However, the mountains in the distance, especially the Grand Ballon, are always present, reminding cyclists of the challenges ahead.
The end of the first day
After almost 70 kilometers on the bike, the feeling of exhaustion is noticeable. But the anticipation of a warm meal and the prospect of camping in nature offer comfort. The night promises peace and relaxation before the big mountain stage awaits the Grand Ballon the next day.
Outlook
Will the mountain stage be successful? What will the night be like in the open air? And will the journey end safely in Basel? All these questions will be answered in the next episode.
The bikepacking adventure offers a unique opportunity to experience nature while being physically active. It is a journey of discovery, learning and growth. And it's proof that sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination.
