The impressive hike through the Samaria Gorge on Crete

The Samaria Gorge in Crete is a true natural wonder and a must for every hiking lover. This article takes you on a spectacular journey through this impressive landscape and offers valuable tips for a successful hike.

The beginning of the adventure

The hike begins at the Samaria Gorge ticket booth. After purchasing a ticket, you go down a secured path. This curved path allows hikers to quickly lose altitude and get closer to the destination. There are numerous drinking water points along the way, so you don't have to take heavy luggage with you.

The beauty of nature

After about 45 minutes you reach the upper reaches of the gorge and continue hiking in the partly dry stream bed. Cairns mark the path and occasionally the path leads through small forest sections that provide pleasant shade. During peak season, thousands of hikers can cross the gorge. But in the low season you can enjoy the breathtaking nature to the fullest.

The abandoned village of Samaria

The path continues towards the abandoned village of Samaria. Although the village is no longer inhabited, there are toilets and a first aid point. A village well offers fresh water, and you can take a pleasant break under fig and mulberry trees.

The Heart of the Gorge

After the village the most impressive part of the gorge begins. The stream bed leads through several narrow passages, which can be crossed by streams of meltwater, especially after winter. The hikers are surrounded by rugged rock walls that rise impressively.

The Iron Gates

A highlight of the hike are the so-called “iron gates” or “sideroportes”. Here the rock walls rise up to 300 meters high and at their narrowest point they are only three meters apart. After this impressive section, the gorge widens again and the river has to be crossed over numerous bridges and stones.

The end of the hike

After you have passed the national park border, it is only two kilometers to the sea. There, hikers can relax on the beach, dip their legs in the cool water or stop off at one of the many taverns. A ferry finally brings the hikers back.

The hike through the Samaria Gorge is an unforgettable experience and offers breathtaking views of Crete's nature. With the right preparation and equipment, this tour will be a highlight of any Crete trip.
