E-bikes are becoming more popular every day than before. It's much easier for the drivers when they don't just have to rely on their own muscle power, but are supported by an electric motor. Mountains, up and down terrain and long routes can be overcome more easily, which even increases our desire to cycle more often.
This naturally raises the question of whether the e-bike is legally considered a normal bicycle? Or are there other regulations that must be observed? Are there different laws between different types of electric bikes? You can find out all about it in this article.
What types of e-bikes are there?
Although we colloquially refer to almost any electric bike as an “e-bike”, there are actually three different types of e-bikes. The largest number of the best-selling e-bikes are actually the so-called “Pedelecs (Pedal Electric Cycles)”. With this type, the cyclist is supported by the motor, but also has to pedal so that the electric drive can be switched on. The sensors on the Pedelec measure how much support you need from the motor. The maximum permitted speed for Pedelecs is currently 25 km/h.
The second type of e-bike is the so-called “S-Pedelec (Speed Pedelec)”. The difference between a Pedelec and an S-Pedelec is that the S-Pedelec is permitted to have a higher speed. With this version of the e-bike motor, you as a cyclist can ride up to 45 km/h and it has a power of 4000W. limited.
