Mountains in Germany
In the first section of this article we inform you about the highest mountains in Germany. The list shows you the highest peaks in Germany. We thought it would be useful preliminary information for our Berglust fans. Most of the mountains lie within the Alps and therefore largely belong to the Berchtesgaden Alps, Wetterstein and Allgäu Alps mountain groups.
Because we cannot completely define the definition of a mountain, we have created two different distinguishing groups on the list. These are the main peaks and the remaining peaks. We have not listed the secondary peaks. According to the UIAA definitions, a peak in the Alps is considered independent if it has a peak height of 30 meters or more. But if you want to classify a peak as an independent mountain, there must be at least one notch height of 100m or more. or according to other sources from 300m. required. According to this definition, only the main peaks are counted as a whole mountain range. All smaller elevations that are below a height of 30 meters are referred to as secondary peaks.
The highest main peaks in Germany are at 2962m. the Zugspitze, at 2744m. the Hochwanner and at 2713m. the Watzmann middle peak. But if you evaluate all the independent peaks here, after the Zugspitze there is the Schneefernerkopf at 2875m and at 2750m. the Mittele Wetterspitze in second and third place. However, these two peaks are part of the Zugspitze massif and are relatively close to the Zugspitze summit.
As the borders of Germany have changed several times throughout history, many different “highest mountains” were listed in the past. In the following table you can see the 31 highest independent peaks in Germany.
