A small lake with a big castle

The Pilsensee is the second smallest of the five lakes in the Fünfseenland. It lies northeast of Lake Ammersee and south of Lake Wörth. The lake is 2.5 kilometers long and 0.76 kilometers wide. The greatest depth is 17.1 meters. It is largely framed by striking moraine walls. When the glaciers opened up at the end of the Würme Ice Age 10.000 to 15.000 years ago, Pilsen was a nearly 10 kilometer long arm or bay of the Ammersee, which was then much larger than it is today.

This arm of the Ammersee reached as far as the village of Delling in the northeast and was only separated from Wesslinger See by a moraine ridge. The Wesslinger See and the Pilsensee were less than two kilometers apart. Since the level of the Ammersee continuously fell in the following centuries and the Kienbach, which geologists technically call the "Schiesgebiet", brought in gravel and sand, the area north of Herrsching was suddenly raised. The swamp and reed area that emerged after the Kienbach delta was filled is now called Herrschinger Moos and is a nature reserve.

The large bay of the Ammersee became today's Pilsensee. The average water level of the Ammersee and the Pilsensee only differs by about one meter. From this small difference in height, geologists can now conclude that the Pilsensee was part of the Ammersee. The two villages of Seefeld and Hechendorf are located on the banks of Lake Pilsensee. In Seefeld, referred to as Sevuelt in old documents, is the castle of Count Toerring©, which was first mentioned in 1302 as Veste Schlossberg and is now considered the most important building in the town.

The castle is considered the birthplace of the “Lords of Seefeld” family, which was first mentioned under this name around 1150. After the Lords of Seefeld died out, Seefeld© Castle passed through the hands of various noble families until the owners became the Lords of Törring-Seefeld© in 1472. Today Seefeld Castle© is privately owned by Hans Caspar Graf zu Toerring-Jettenbach© and cannot be visited, but some can be rented out for certain cultural events.

In the inner courtyard of the castle there is a brewery (which of course also serves the "Graf Toerring" beer) and several small shops and workshops. Small exhibitions also take place there from time to time. Since 1986, the castle has also housed a branch of the State Museum of Egyptian Art, where temporary exhibitions are shown. The village of Hechendorf is mentioned in documents from the middle of the 12th century. Century also mentioned as “Höchendorf”, which means “village on the hills”.

With the regional reform of 1978, the towns of Oberalting, Meiling, Unering, Drößling and Hechendorf merged to form the larger community of Seefeld, which received its name in memory of the eventful history of the settlement on Lake Pilsensee and the aristocratic families who lived there. In 1970, for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, the Munich-Herrsching railway line, which had existed since 1903, was expanded and Hechendorf received its own S-Bahn station.

The Pilsensee – a paradise for anglers

Pilsen Lake has a catchment area of ​​around 40 square kilometers. Apart from a few small streams and a rather insignificant groundwater flow, the Pilsensee is mainly fed by the rivers Aubach, Widdersberger Bach and Höllgraben. The lake flows into the Weißbach, which in turn flows into the Ammersee. These outflows and inflows cause the Pilsensee to change its entire water volume in one year. Lake Starnberg needs 21 years to do this.

This is one of the reasons why the water quality of Lake Pilsensee is so excellent. A large part of the shore of Lake Pilsensee is now protected and is not accessible. However, the lake is developed for local recreational tourism and has a large campsite near Hechendorf as well as swimming areas on the east and west banks.

The beauty of the area can be discovered on foot or by bike on the 11 km long Pilsensee circular hiking trail. This hiking trail leads over long stretches with views of the lake. Due to the ancient and extensive reed and rush growth on the shores of the lake, it was also known as Pilsensee.

There are no significant maritime activities on Lake Pilsen like there are on Lake Ammer and Starnbergsjön. Only private sailing, rowing and electric boats as well as boats from boat rental companies can be found on the lake. Thanks to the abundance of plants and fish, Lake Pilsensee is a jewel for anglers. Members of the Pilsensee - Wörthsee fishing club have already caught catfish up to 2.14 m long and over 60 kg in weight. Even a pike over 1.30 m was caught. In contrast to Ammersee and Starnberger See, due to its small size, Pilsensee freezes over very quickly in winter, much to the delight of ice skaters, curlers and anyone else who wants to walk around the lake.

Pilsensee is not just a popular destination for “tourists”. Anglers also get their money's worth here: the lake is full of tasty fish.

The Pilsensee campsite is located in the southwest of Munich, directly on the beautiful Pilsensee in Bavaria, with a view of the Alps. The holiday region between Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee offers many excursion options to well-known places.

From Camping Pilsensee you can reach Munich in just 40 minutes by S-Bahn. This makes it easy to plan a visit to the state capital. And in the evening, when you return from the hustle and bustle of the city, peace and relaxation await you on the shores of Lake Pilsensee.

Boats and SUPs can be rented directly at the campsite. You can also fish and sail on Lake Pilsensee. The large children's playground with table tennis tables and a soccer field is particularly popular with families with children.

The campsite has modern sanitary facilities. If you wish, you can rent your own bathroom here. There are also cooking facilities and a barbecue area. The restaurant by the lake and the kiosk ensure your physical well-being, and the small supermarket (open from May to October) offers fresh pastries.

How much does a camping holiday cost?

Go on vacation well prepared: The following points will give you an overview of the possible costs that may arise during your camping vacation.

Costs for travel

A camping holiday also involves some costs that you should take into account when planning. Especially if you are traveling abroad, you need to take into account the increased fuel consumption and possible travel costs associated with the trip.

Toll costs

In some European countries, most roads, tunnels and bridges are subject to tolls. Depending on the route, you may have to pay tolls to use the roads by car or caravan. The toll is paid when entering and exiting toll stations. So take cash or a credit card with you when waiting in line.

In some European countries you also need a vignette to drive on motorways and expressways. In contrast to distance-based tolls, vignettes have a fixed price. You can buy them before your journey at the petrol stations or from your local ADAC partner. You can also get vignettes at petrol stations at border crossings. Please note that the vignettes are valid for different periods. Before you buy a card, you should check whether the specified period of validity is sufficient for the entire trip. The costs of tolls and vignettes vary from country to country and can change at short notice. Inquire about the exact costs 2 weeks before your trip.

Ferry costs

Depending on where you want to travel, you should find out the route and the cost of the ferry crossing in advance. Some connections have limited travel dates. Space can be limited, especially in high season.

Fuel costs

If you are traveling in your car or caravan, fuel costs also play a role. The cost depends on the length of the trip, driving style and fuel consumption. A general rule of thumb for a fairly accurate cost calculation is

Average fuel consumption multiplied by the fuel price: (divided) by 100 = (yield) cost per kilometer.

An example: If your motorhome uses 21 liters at a fuel price of €1.50, which results in the following costs per kilometer

21 x 1.50 ÷ 100 = 0.32 (€/km).

Then multiply the kilometers by the fuel costs per kilometer. Leave a little margin at the top: this will avoid inconsistencies in the calculation if there are unavoidable deviations or gaps.

Possible costs during the vacation

During your vacation you will have fixed and variable costs. These costs depend on how many people are there and how many people will be staying at the campsite. The destination and the level of the campsite also influence the costs.

Electricity and water at the campsite

If you are traveling with a caravan, you will need electricity and water. It is possible to provide both at a campsite. Electricity for caravans is usually billed separately, either daily or based on consumption. Pitches with electricity are actually more expensive than pitches without electricity, regardless of whether you use electricity or not.

A fee is also charged for warm water from the tap: hot showers are usually more expensive. At some campsites you pay with a bracelet, a magnetic card or with pocket money in the form of coins. The payment method will be communicated to you when you register on site. Water taps are available at the entrance to the campsite or on site to fill up your caravan. The campsite usually charges per liter. In southern countries, operators offer water in 10 liter bottles, the price of which varies depending on the region and campsite.

Costs for leisure and comfort

Another cost factor is leisure and comfort. Calculate the cost of both. You know best which services you don't want to miss out on during your vacation and which excursions you want to go on.

The use of washing machines and dryers is not essential, but it is convenient. You can also use the campsite's leisure facilities such as swimming pools, saunas or gyms, as well as canoeing or dining out, but you should take this into account when planning the cost of your camping holiday.

Fees for visitors and the environment

Some resorts charge a fee per person per day for beach use. The costs vary depending on the holiday destination. Environmental and wastewater fees should also be taken into account. If you are traveling with your dog, you should also factor in the additional costs. Many campsites charge a daily fee for your four-legged friend. It's best to ask the campsite or tourist office before you leave how much the costs will be on site.

Tips for saving money for your camping holiday

Book in low season

If you want to save money and are not tied to school holidays by not booking your trip in high season. In the off-season, campsite prices are generally lower than in the summer months. In Europe, the months of January to May and October to January are typically low season, May, June and September are low season and July and August are high season. The distribution of winter campsites is different: the summer months are the cheapest.

The price differences are not only seasonal, but also depend on the type of parking space. Because a caravan site is primarily a parking space and does not have the typical facilities of a campsite, it is significantly cheaper in comparison. In many places, the parking spaces are practically free because the operator only covers the costs of electricity and water. However, you should be aware that you will not have a local contact at the campsite and that you will lack facilities such as a shop or toilets.
